Chapter 11

I left the boys at the bleachers by the pool to go change into my suit. I pulled my hair in a ponytail then put the swim cap on. I was little nervous going out in my red swimsuit knowing Zach will be out there. Why am I being such a nerd? I pushed out my shoulders and walked out of the locker room to the pool. And froze, great, Sue was trying out also? I looked over where Zach and James were seated. Zach’s eyes were practically glowing. I blushed and walked over to where coach wanted us lined by the pool. Sue was on my right.

“I warned you to stay out of my way.” She whispered in a menacing tone. She was something else.

I tried to ignore her, she was not going to ruin the one thing I enjoyed. The whistle blew and I dove in. And the rest of the world fell away, it was just me and the water. Familiar, comfortable. I didn’t pay attention to the other swimmers or the cheers of the spectators. Just swam. When I finished, I looked around and realized I had beaten all the other swimmers. I looked over at the rest swimmers just now reaching the edge and noticed Sue. She was glaring at me so hard I had to drop my gaze as I got out of the pool. I heard a soft growl and looked up. Zach was looking a Sue, eyes narrowed, but when he saw me watching him he smiled and picked me up and swung me around. I laughed. Laughing felt really good. I decided I need to do it more habitually. Mom would want me happy.

“You were amazing il mio bel fiore!” He voiced, while I blushed.

James gave me a cautious hug while watching Zach and said, “That was awesome! You looked like a mermaid out there!” I hugged him back and Zach just smiled softly. Good. He seems improved now.

“Brilliant Lily! See you Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, for meets, you’re on the team.” Coach Betty told me clapping me on the back.

I stumbled forward as she did and Zach steadied me with an arm around my waist.

“I have an idea.” Zach declared suddenly.

“What?” asked James. Zach leaned over and whisper something to him and James grinned.

“What?!” I asked. Zach just smiled, a sly smirk, and told me, “it’s a surprise.” I rolled my eyes but laughed.

I went back to the locker room to shower and change. As I was putting my swim gear in my locker it slammed shut on my hand. I cried out in pain then looked up to see Sue staring at me with a lethal expression. What is with this girl? Why all this hate for me?

“I told you to stay out of my way little sub, but you just couldn’t do it, could you? Well, enjoy Zach’s attention now. Take it from me, it won’t last long.” I didn’t say anything just stared at the floor trying not to make it worse.
